The Nesvellir home in Iceland is run according to a new ideology in aging services. Great emphasis is placed on the right to self-determination and participation of the population. The best is taken from independent living and it combines the security of a nursing home. At Hrafnista in Nesvöllur, 10 residents live in each unit.
There, nurses, doctors, paramedics, social workers and staff work around the clock. The design of the building is to support all units of the home, e.g. staff facilities, facilities for social work, day care, occupational therapy and rehabilitation, as well as various other things in the activities of nursing homes, are not located in the home itself, but in a service center which is in a special building connected to Hrafnista’s housing.
